Types Of Tree Injections

Injecting chemicals directly into the sap stream of trees is not new. In fact, it’s been used for more than 30 years. And there are varying techniques.

• Macroinfusions use a larger volume of chemicals and water to treat a larger part of the tree (or the whole tree). This technique involves infusing relatively large amounts of fluid containing the active ingredients, diluted with water in most instances (as much as 50 gallons in very large trees).

• Microinjections take a different approach. This technique punches very small holes through the bark. One advantage to doing microinjections is that you’ll use fewer chemicals and do less damage to your tree.  At each injection point, roughly 1 to 10 milliliters of concentrated active ingredient is injected just under the bark.

Another difference between these two methods is where the injections occur. Macroinfusions require drilling and injecting in the tree trunk. But they’re not recommended.

Trunk injection formulations can take hours or weeks to move throughout the tree.  They can control some pests, but they can also result in less pesticide being used and may even hurt non-targets, like beneficial insects.

Injection wounds are also a problem. A wound opens the trunk to insect pests and decay fungi. The drilling may also break through internal barriers within the trunk the tree has made to wall off decay. Decay may then spread within the tree or from the inside out through injection wounds.

Microinjections For Trees

Administering microinjections higher up the tree allows the chemicals to work their way down through the root system.
